The Keepers are the spirit of those in their lifetimes who were former witches who ascended to become one with the magical world upon their deaths. In the case of Sarah Borden, she sacrificed her life to save the world as Prue Halliwell sacrificed her life to save the doctor's life and became Keeper after that but soon she got a sense that she had to warn her sisters about the great danger and she escaped to Earth.

The Distant Past

Once witches fought against powerful upper-level demons however one of them died and had a chance to become a Protector who would protect all magic from evil.

Sarah Borden's Death

Sarah was a very powerful witch and accessed many of her generation's powers who were witches once however Sarah thought she could win every battle with the most powerful forces of evil but she was wrong even her most powerful powers couldn't beat of most powerful forces evil and her magic was weak against to new forces of evil being. She died in 1915 from injuries sustained during a battle with the unknown demon who was sent to The Source. After her death, she becomes a Keeper to guard the magic from evil beings.

Prue's Death & Becoming a Keeper

On May 17, 2001, the eldest sister of Piper and Phoebe Halliwell, Charmed One Prue Halliwell was killed by the Source of All Evil's personal assassin, the demon Shax. After her death, Prue reunited with all her loved ones that passed away - her first love Andy Trudeau, her mother Patricia, and her grandmother, Penny as well as other members of her family. Prue, however, refused to move on to the Afterlife because of her strong connection to her sisters; this connection began to tear her soul apart. Prue was informed about the relationship between Patty and her Whitelighter Sam Wilder and the child that resulted from their love, Paige Matthews. Instead of reuniting with her sisters fearing that the reunion could have dire consequences for the Power of Three, when Piper cast a spell to Call a Lost Witch, hoping it would return Prue to her, Prue intervened and sent the call through the wind to Paige, knowing that she could reconstitute the Charmed Ones and carry on the sisters' destiny of protecting innocents from the forces of darkness.

This intervention resulted in Paige discovering a newspaper containing an obituary about Prue and the place and time where the funeral would be held. Paige was automatically drawn to the funeral and left work to attend the funeral, where she met Phoebe Halliwell. The two women shook hands, triggering a premonition in which Phoebe foresaw the demon Shax attacking Paige. Phoebe informed her sister Piper as well as Cole Turner, Leo Wyatt, and Darryl Morris about the vision, and along with Cole, she located Paige and saved her from Shax.

Piper then summoned Penny hoping for an explanation as to why the Source was after Paige and Patty appeared as well and informed Piper and Phoebe that she had an affair with her Whitelighter and had a fourth daughter, Paige. She explained that Paige would be able to remake the Charmed Ones. After that, Paige came to Halliwell Manor and helped her sisters vanquish Shax. She then realized her power of Telekinetic Orbing and although she was first hesitant, moved in with the Halliwell sisters and assisted them in the battle against evil.

Refusing to move on to the Afterlife, Prue becomes The Keeper of Magic to guard All Magic from evil and also watches over her sisters.

Peyton's Death in the Dark Future 2030 and Becoming a Keeper

Peyton and Phoebe have a fight about magic and during an argument, Phoebe accidentally kills her own sister when Piper and Paige arrive to discuss Phoebe but they find their dead sister in front of them and Phoebe standing next to her. Piper runs to her dead sister's side and cries about losing another sister loss again. Paige was shocked and ran to Piper's side to comfort her. Phoebe understands what she has done and flames out. Peyton appears as a Protector in front of them and accepts her fate as Keeper. Piper and Paige saw her then Peyton smiled and teleported out a bright light.

Powers and Abilities

Basic Powers

  • Spell Casting: The ability to cast spells and perform rituals.
  • Potion Making: The ability to brew and concoct potions, remedies, and elixirs that have supernatural properties.

Other Powers

  • Individual Powers: Since they were witches, the Keeper of Magic possesses a variety of powers that are unique to each individual.

Inactive Powers

  • Immunity: Being witches, the Keeper of Magic was inherently immune to certain magical abilities (e.g. the Sirens' songs and Pixie Dust).
  • Sensing: the ability to determine the location and status of other beings by concentrating on them. Keepers can sense if something is wrong for example if someone has stolen or taken away a magic themselves.

Spirit Powers

  • Invisibility: the ability to make oneself unable to be seen by other beings. For certain species, being invisible is a natural state of being.
  • Wisping: The ability to teleport allows them to turn into swirling white orbs instead of blue and white orbs as Whitelighters do.
  • Intangibility: the ability to alter one's molecular structure to a state that can pass through physical matter; rendering the user immune to many physical and magical attacks.
  • Floating: the ability to rise a few inches off the ground and float around.
  • Spirit Writing: The ability to write messages from the afterlife through the use of orbs. As a keeper, Prue once wrote a message for her sister, Peyton to warn her of The Source's return.

Former Powers

  • The Power of Three: The collective power of the Charmed Ones, stems from their sisterly bond. Evidently, certain spells require the Power of Three and cannot be cast by even the most powerful witches, like Billie and Christy Jenkins. Following their deaths and their ascension as Keeper of Magic, they have forever lost the Power of Three.
  • Resistance: Presumably through the Power of Three, the Charmed Ones can resist the effects of having their memory erased to a certain extent, allowing the memories to slowly bleed back through.
  • The Power of Four: The current power of The Charmed Ones: Piper, Phoebe, Paige, and Peyton. It's represented by the Celtic Cross, which represents four-way unity. The Power of Four was created after Melinda Warren prophesied that soon four sisters would come together and create a power unparalleled to the power they had before. Piper, Phoebe, Paige, and Peyton can access this power now. In the dark timeline where Peyton was killed by her own sister, Phoebe accidentally and she becomes the Keeper of Magic, she is forever lost to the power of four after her death.

Former Weaknesses

  • Mortality: Despite being witches, the Keeper of Magic was immortal and never unageing after their death.
  • The Destruction of the Sisterhood: Despite the Power of Three or Power of Four being one of their greatest strengths. Once Charmed one is dead, and the other ones lose the power of three or four.
Weaknesses
  • Death of Magic: Keepers without exception are tied to the magic. If the magic dies, all magic dies with it, along with the protectors.
Trivia
  • Whitelighters and Spirits have the same teleport power but different effects. Spirits' teleport power allows them to turn into swirling white orbs instead of blue and white orbs like Whitelighters do.
